Speakers: Greg Appelbaum (Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, Duke University) L. I was recently Finally, the fourth important trend in cognitive science today is greater appreciation of the social dimensions of cognition, which may seem go in the opposite direction from the biological trend of cognitive neuroscience but is actually compatible with it. As recipients of NSF Graduate Research Fellowships, Eshin Jolly will pursue graduate studies in cognitive neuroscience at Dartmouth while Aryeh Drager '12 will head to Colorado State University to study atmospheric science. Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary investigation of mind and intelligence, embracing psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, philosophy, anthropology, and computational intelligence. With the advance of technology, studies relating to social sciences and neurosciences have brought about interdisciplinary areas of brain mapping, It was not until John Cacioppo and Gary Berntson published an article in American Psychologist in 1992 that the psychology of the individual was closely related to affective and cognitive neuroscience, which focuses on how the brain processes social interactions. What does the latest research in brain functioning have to do with the mind? The area of overlap between different disciplines, including cognitive neuroscience and education, has been identified as a transdisciplinary field of study called educational neuroscience or neuroeducation. Cognitive neuroscientists use the brain as a dependent measure for the mind, much as psychologists use reaction time and eye tracking as dependent measures for the mind. Yet, we call ourselves Homo sapiens, meaning “The Intelligent Ape”, in response to our superior cognitive functions, our ability to rationalise, to predict the future, and our propensity to learn, especially from our mistakes. In common parlance people confuse them frequently. The issues it gathers together involve philosophy of mind, moral philosophy, applied ethics, psychology and cognitive neuroscience, plus less centrally a couple of other areas (eg evolutionary biology, AI). Clinical neuroscience - looks at the disorders of the nervous system, while psychiatry, for example, looks at the disorders of the mind. So why don't you do You reckon that evolutionary biology and neuroscience are the go – well, they have your answer. If you are bored, that simply means that your mind is not fully occupied – it has some spare 'processing capacity'. Eshin Jolly and Aryeh Jolly, who describes his fellowship as “pretty awesome,” is a first-year graduate student in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, where he works with Professor Thalia Wheatley.
